弥尔顿·米勒(1830-1899)

美国摄影师马歇尔·弥尔顿·米勒1830年4月5日出生于威尔蒙德、韦德哈县(Windha County)的邓莫斯顿,父亲路德·米勒(Luther Miller)和母亲路安娜·克纳普(Lurena Knapp)都是邓莫斯顿人。1860年7月19日,米勒抵达香港,他此行的目的是加入“韦德与霍华德”照相馆,这时香港已比前两周平静了很多,英法联军的百余艘军舰已经北上,但香港市面上依然显得很忙乱,米勒立即投入到摄影工作当中,米勒是一个有经验的摄影师,他的加入使韦德有精力腾出时间把“韦德与霍华德”照相馆的业务开到内地,之后韦德与霍华德进入中国内地旅行,米勒镇守香港的照相馆。
弥尔顿·米勒在香港和广州拍摄了大量的肖像,包括中国商人、中国官员及其家人,同时他还拍摄了外国商人、外交官以及军人,他拍摄了香港、澳门和广州的景物,最为著名的一幅代表作为《广州城》,这幅1861-1863年拍摄的作品,全景式的记录了当时广州城的景象。1862年,美国出版商E.& H. T. Anthony & Co.发行了一套由米勒拍摄的中国和日本题材的立体照片,此缉共发行有41幅。
弥尔顿·米勒是十九世纪拍摄中国最为优秀的肖像摄影师,他与被摄者之间的沟通常常能使被摄者的个性突显出来,同时他用摄影将每个人的个性记录展现出来。他是十九世纪拍摄中国最为重要的摄影大师之一。


 

Milton M. Miller

 

American photographer Milton M. Miller was born in Apr.5, 1830 in Windha County, both his father Luther Miller and mother Lurena Knapp were natives there. On Jul.19, 1860, Miller sailed to Hong Kong, aiming to joining the Wade and Howard Photography Studio. At that time in Hong Kong it was much calmer than what it was two weeks ago. More than one hundred warships of the British and French troops had sailed north, but the Hong Kong market still seemed hectic. Miller was immediately involved in the work of photographing, as an experienced photographer, he managed to make time for Wade to open the business of the Wade and Howard Photography Studio to mainland. After then Wade and Howard traveled to mainland China, and Miller kept staying in the Photography Studio in Hong Kong.

 

Milton M. Miller took a lot of portraits in Hong Kong and Guangzhou, including Chinese businessmen, Chinese officials and their families, while he also photographed foreign businessmen, diplomats and soldiers. He photographed the scenery of Hong Kong, Macao and Guangzhou, of which is the most famous one the Guangzhou City. This photo was taken during 1861~1863, recording the panoramic scene of Guangzhou city. In 1862, American publisher E.& H. T. Anthony & Co. published a series of photographs of Chinese and Japanese theme taken by Miller, 41 pieces in total.

 

 

Milton M. Miller was the most outstanding Chinese portrait photographer in the 19th century; his communication with those being photographed can always make their personalities stand out. At the same time, he recorded everyone’s personality by photography. He is one of the most important photographer focusing on China in the 19th century.
